Football Managers — Common Questions

Most football managers start with FA coaching qualifications. The pathway begins with the FA Level 1 Introduction to Coaching, progressing through Level 2, UEFA B, UEFA A and the Pro Licence. Many non-league managers hold at least a Level 2 or UEFA B qualification.
Requirements vary by league level. From Step 1-2, clubs typically expect at least a UEFA B Licence. At Steps 3-7 and county league level, an FA Level 2 is often sufficient, though many managers hold higher qualifications.
With over 14,000 clubs across the non-league pyramid, there are thousands of managers and coaches working at all levels. Our directory tracks managers and their career histories across the National League System.
Payment varies widely. National League managers may receive full-time salaries, while managers at Steps 3-5 often receive modest match-day fees or expenses. Many grassroots and county league managers are volunteers.
